Heat Alert: Stay Safe as Temperatures Spike

A national heat alert has been issued, with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C across several provinces on 23 October 2025. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid open flames, and follow safety guidance as fire and health risks rise amid the hot, dry conditions.

The national weather service has issued an advisory for warm to hot conditions in parts of the country on 23 October 2025, with broad areas expected to see daytime temperatures rise above 30°C. Residents in affected provinces should prepare for health and fire risks associated with the heat and follow local guidance and updates.

What the advisory says for 23 October

The advisory warns of warm to hot conditions in urban and inland pockets. Temperatures in some northern and eastern districts are forecast to climb into the low 30s Celsius during the warmest hours, while coastal zones may experience humid conditions that make the heat feel stronger than the thermometer reads. Local forecasts also note the potential for scattered thunderstorms in some interior areas later in the day.

These short-term spikes fit a wider seasonal outlook that points to above-normal temperature variability and a greater chance of prolonged hot spells across the summer months. Residents are advised to keep tuned to official updates as conditions can change quickly with shifting wind patterns and frontal systems.

Elevated fire risk — what to watch for

Hot, dry pockets and gusty winds increase the risk of veld and brush fires. Fire danger indices for the region indicate moderate to high fire danger in various districts, and authorities routinely warn that fires can spread rapidly where dry fuel loads are present. Follow any active fire bans, avoid open flames, discard cigarette butts responsibly, and report smoke to emergency services immediately.

Prevention measures that help reduce household risk include clearing dry vegetation away from buildings, storing flammable materials safely, and having a basic evacuation plan and emergency kit ready if you live near fire-prone veld.

Hydration and heat-safety tips for outdoor workers

Humid coastal heat and inland high temperatures both create strain for people working outdoors. Prioritise hydration: start by drinking fluids before your shift, schedule regular shaded breaks, and avoid heavy tasks during the hottest part of the day when possible. Employers should provide shaded rest areas and easy access to drinking water.

Hydration tip Practical guidance
Before work Drink 450–600 ml (16–20 oz) of water 1–2 hours before starting.
During work Top up regularly — roughly 250 ml (8 oz) every 15–20 minutes under heavy exertion, adjusting for heat and humidity.
After work Replenish fluids and electrolytes; rest in a cool place and monitor for symptoms.

Lessons from international heat events

Similar extreme heat events in other parts of the world have shown that public cool-spaces, clear alerting systems and community outreach reduce heat-related illness and deaths. Emergency managers increasingly use cooling centers, targeted alerts for vulnerable populations, and temporary adjustments to work schedules to reduce harm during multi-day heat events.

Urban resilience: practical adaptation ideas

Cities that face frequent extreme heat have adopted practical measures such as expanding shaded public spaces, planting urban trees, and promoting cooler building materials (for example, reflective roofs). These low-regret interventions cut local temperatures and protect vulnerable neighbourhoods during heatwaves.

Everyday precautions for households

Beyond hydration, take these straightforward steps: wear light, breathable clothing; avoid direct sun between late morning and mid-afternoon where possible; use sunscreen; keep indoor spaces ventilated or cooled; check on elderly or at-risk neighbours; and ensure pets have cool shelter and fresh water.

If someone shows signs of heatstroke — confusion, loss of consciousness, very high body temperature, or an absence of sweating — call emergency services immediately and move the person to a cooler place while beginning rapid cooling measures (fan, cool compresses) if it is safe to do so.

Stay informed via official updates and local emergency services, and follow guidance from local authorities until the advisory has passed.
