The festive season in South Africa is supposed to be filled with braais, family gatherings, and sunny summer vibes. Yet for many, December 2025 brings a surge of grief, financial stress, and emotional exhaustion that can turn celebrations into overwhelming challenges. If you’re feeling this weight, know you’re far from alone. Insights from the South African Depression and Anxiety Group’s (SADAG) latest 2025 Festive Feelings Study, along with expert guidance, highlight why this happens and offer practical ways to cope.

The Reality Behind the Festive Cheer

While holidays are portrayed as pure joy, this year’s realities in South Africa reveal deeper struggles. SADAG’s 2025 Festive Feelings Study, based on responses from over 2,095 adults aged 18 to 65+, shows a nation experiencing a mix of emotions: some thriving with optimism, others merely surviving, and many disconnecting from the festivities altogether.

Key findings underscore the mental health toll:

  • 73% are worried about financial strain in January, known as “Januworry,” after holiday spending.
  • 45% have felt very lonely during previous festive seasons.
  • 58% have started the new year feeling exhausted from emotional overload.
  • 31% experience ongoing feelings of depression, hopelessness, or constant nervousness.
  • Top reported conditions include depression (30%), stress (21%), anxiety (15%), panic attacks (11%), burnout (7%), and bipolar disorder (5%).

A hopeful note: 46% of those diagnosed with mental health conditions report feeling less stressed than undiagnosed individuals, emphasizing the relief that professional support can provide. Yet, 54% have never sought a diagnosis, allowing issues to build unchecked.

Suicide risks are particularly high in December and January in South Africa, as confirmed by local research. Unlike winter blues in the Northern Hemisphere, our summer pressures stem from economic hardships, family expectations, and amplified emotions in the sun.

Common Triggers for Holiday Stress

These challenges build from multiple sources that intensify during the holidays. Understanding them is the first step to managing them.

Financial Pressures: High unemployment and rising costs for gifts, travel, and food lead 73% to dread January bills. Men may withdraw feeling unable to provide, while women often handle multiple responsibilities. Interestingly, the study shows that joy in lower-income communities often comes from non-material connections, proving fulfillment doesn’t require wealth.

Grief and Loss: The emphasis on family highlights missing loved ones, reopening old wounds. Lingering effects from past losses, including post-COVID grief, can trigger deep sadness. Cultural barriers to discussing death make it harder to process openly.

Loneliness Amid Celebrations: Despite gatherings, 45% report profound isolation—common for expats, the elderly, or those far from home. Social media’s highlight reels worsen feelings of inadequacy through constant comparison.

Family Tensions and Disrupted Routines: Reunions can surface unresolved conflicts, especially with alcohol involved or differing cultural traditions. Changes in sleep, diet, and daily structure can heighten anxiety, particularly for those with trauma backgrounds.

Experts like Dr. Bronwyn Dworzanowski-Venter point out gendered differences: men (underrepresented in surveys at around 14-15%) often disconnect due to provider shame and unemployment, facing higher risks of isolation or substance issues.

Practical Tips to Navigate the Season

Feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re failing—these festive mental health pressures are widespread and valid. SADAG and experts recommend these strategies to protect your well-being:

  1. Set Boundaries and Budgets: Politely decline overwhelming events or unnecessary spending. Create a realistic budget focusing on essentials. Divide life into areas like physical health, finances, relationships, and community—tackle small steps in one at a time.
  2. Maintain Self-Care: Prioritize sleep (planned by 51%), healthy eating, and exercise like walks (39%). Limit alcohol and rich foods that affect mood. Carve out daily quiet time for meditation, hobbies, or reflection.
  3. Handle Grief Intentionally: Honor memories through rituals like candle-lighting or story-sharing. Journaling builds resilience (though only 11% plan it). If grief intensifies, professional help makes a real difference—diagnosed individuals often cope better.
  4. Fight Loneliness: Seek small connections, like a coffee meetup or volunteering. Reduce social media to avoid comparisons. Tools like mindfulness apps can provide discreet support.
  5. Stay Grounded: Practice deep breathing or mindful activities to manage disruptions. It’s okay to cancel plans and rest (a strategy for 32%).
  6. Recognize Warning Signs: Increased irritability, withdrawal, or anxiety? Reach out early. SADAG helplines (0800 567 567 or 0800 456 789) are available 24/7, including holidays. SMS 31393 for support.
  7. Encourage Open Talks: Normalize discussions about struggles. Share resources in your community, especially where access is limited.

For men specifically: Regular check-ins on sleep, nutrition, movement, and stress can break the silence. Seeking counseling is a strength that prevents crises.

Additional ways to build resilience include fostering meaningful connections over material gifts, allowing yourself to feel emotions without judgment, and viewing the season as a potential reset for reflection and renewal.

Emerging Stronger in 2026

Despite intensified pressures from economic challenges and past traumas, the SADAG study reveals pockets of joy and resilience across communities. Focus on small positives—a sunny walk, a genuine conversation, or simply resting.

Self-compassion is key: implement these tips, reach out without hesitation, and remember that help is a sign of strength. SADAG remains a constant resource, with lines open year-round.

As South Africa embraces the holidays, prioritize compassion, balance, and mental well-being. One breath, one step at a time—you can navigate this season and step into the new year renewed.
