Today’s Weather [WATCH]: Warning for Severe Thunderstorms, rain and thundershowers in many provinces, clear in the west – 7 September

Wet and unsettled weather dominates much of the country today, with rain showers soaking Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, while showers and thundershowers rumble across the Free State, North West and Northern Cape, where temperatures range from a chilly 10 degrees in Johannesburg to a warmer 22 degrees in Kimberley. The South African Weather Service has issued several warnings for severe thunderstorms across affected regions, so keep an eye on the skies if you’re out and about. The Western Cape offers welcome relief with clear skies and a pleasant high of 29 degrees in Cape Town, though extreme veld fire conditions mean fire safety remains a serious concern in dry areas.

⚠️ Weather Warnings

Veld Fire Conditions (Warning Level 10), valid until 23:59 on 8 September.
Areas: Vredendal.

• Conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. Under these conditions fires may develop and spread rapidly resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human and/or animal life.

All personnel and equipment should be removed from the field. Fire teams, labour and equipment are to be placed on full stand-by. At first sign of smoke, every possible measure should be taken in order to bring the fire under control in the shortest possible time. All available aircraft are to be called for without delay.

Severe Thunderstorms (Warning Level 6), valid until 12:59 on 7 September.
Areas: Hoopstad, Bothaville, Frankfort, Reitz, Sasolburg, Brandfort, Welkom, Parys, Dealesville, Warden, Kroonstad.

• Flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas, resulting in closure of some bridges and roads.
• Damages or loss of infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, livelihood and livestock.
• Danger to life (fast flowing streams / deep water).
• Disruption to municipal and other essential services.
• Disruption and loss of agricultural activities.
• Major travel disruptions.

Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects. Do not go fishing or play golf as both the golf clubs and fishing rods are a good conductor of electricity. • Orange Level 6 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms resulting in flooding of settlements and roads, strong gusty wind and hail causing damages to structures, travel disruptions and municipal service outages incidents over the northern and eastern half of the Free State.
• Yellow Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms resulting in localised damages to structures, falling trees and local fire incidents due to excessive lightning over southern parts of Gauteng, the Highveld of Mpumalanga, the southern and central parts of the North West, the northern vast parts of the Free State and in places in the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape.
