It seems to be a bit of a tradition for the Spider-Man co-stars to end up dating. We first saw it with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, and now again with Tom Holland and Zendaya, who is the latest Spider-Man movie couple.
But now the question on everyone’s mind is did the original Spider-Man duo, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, ever date?
The tradition started in 2001
According to reports, the pair did date for about a year. Maguire and Dunst reportedly started dating in 2001 after meeting long the set of the first Spider-Man.
The pair was cast as Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson and clearly, a spark grew between them in real life.
They managed to keep their relationship very private and never revealed exactly when they first got together.
The couple split before the second Spider-Man movie
The romance between Maguire and Dunst didn’t last too long as they reportedly split before the release of their second Spider-Man film, which was released in 2004.
According to sources close to the couple, there was never any bad blood between the pair and the break-up seemed to be mutual. And the fact that the pair continued to be on-screen lovers in the second and third Spider-Man movies clearly shows that there was no awkwardness…or they are just great at their jobs!
The Spider-Man director, Sam Raimi, even feared that they would not get their chemistry back after the break up:
“They apparently began dating with each other, I think, in the middle of the first movie … but definitely they eventually broke up before the second movie. I was concerned they wouldn’t get the same chemistry back, but it was just me worrying.”
