On the 8th of February 2022, the world observes Safer Internet Day. On this day, we praise the vast developments made in the realm of technology. And at the same time, acknowledge the dangers that may come with the growth.
How it Started
Originally, a European network of Awareness Centres called InSafe created Safer Internet Day. Their goal was to create and promote better usage of the internet. While focusing on safety as well. InSafe headed off the annual day of awareness in 2004, making 2022’s Safer Internet Day its 19th edition. Then in 2009, as the World Wide Web grew, Safer Internet Day committees were introduced to increase awareness, hoping to bolster safety. And eventually, in 2012, the day gained official recognition in the United States. After the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the European Commission signed a joint agreement. Today, Safer Internet Day is celebrated in over 100 different countries.
The day itself changes every year but is always observed on a Tuesday in February. Last year it took place on the 9th of February, and in 2023 we celebrate it on the 14th of February, the same day as Valentine’s Day.
How to Ensure Safer Internet in 2022
The first step in ensuring your own personal internet safety is to check that all your software is up to date. Otherwise, one should also surf the internet in a safe manner. Avoid suspicious-looking websites and links. And don’t hand out your personal data unless you know the site and are aware of any transactions that should be taking place. Furthermore, make sure to use secure passwords, and avoid saving them in easily accessible places. This Year’s Theme
The 2022 theme for Safer Internet Day is “Together for a better internet”. And will focus on making the internet a safer and better place for all, especially for children and young people.
