Ramaphosa gets grilled at post-SONA debate

At Monday’s post-SONA debate, opposition parties grilled President Cyril Rampahosa for his state of the nation address last week.

The DA even went as far as to propose a “no-confidence vote” against Ramaphosa and his entire cabinet. The political party slammed the president for not holding his executive accountable for “rampant corruption” and “widespread economic decline”.

The EFF also joined in and said that Ramaphosa’s reliance on the private sector and extra-governmental organizations were already a vote of no-confidence in the ministers and deputies he appointed.

Will Government be paying Eskom’s billions of debt?

According to the International Monetary Fund, the government is considering taking over part or all of Eskom’s debt as it’s looking at restructuring Eskom’s loan obligations.

The power utility owes R392 billion ($28.8 billion).

Local authorities are still discussing what would be best – to assume part or all of the debt upfront or continue making annual transfers of funds to the company. The latter may be higher than budget estimates, however.

Hoërskool Jan Viljoen’s chaotic protests after racism claims arise

Last Friday a fight broke out between pupils allegedly due to racial claims. However, this seems to be a regular occurrence at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen as parents started protesting outside the school about how their children have to deal with racism from other students on a daily basis.

As tensions grew, more people joined the protests – students from other schools and political parties. It got to the point where private security wasn’t enough and the SAPS were contacted and had to use stun grenades to disperse the crowd.
