This weekend, from about midnight on Friday, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) expects heavy and disruptive rain across most of the Free State and North West Province. As a result, it has released a level four warning for the western parts of the two provinces and a level five warning for the eastern areas of both provinces. SAWS predicts that the heavy rainfall in both provinces will continue through the weekend, with the severity tapering off towards midnight on Sunday the 10th of April.

The warning alerts the public to the possibility of general flooding. Reminding travellers to be especially cautious of the flooding of roads which will result in dangerous driving conditions. Furthermore, there is a warning of possible damage to both formal and informal infrastructure. Along with the disruption of services. SAWS also alerts the public to the likelihood of agricultural losses.

Additionally, the department instructs the public to stay indoors and off the roads if possible. In the event that a person must travel, they are advised to stay clear of rivers and any swollen streams. If the water is above the ankles, rather avoid it.

The statement also warns of the possibility of a loss of life in Free State and North West Province where the heavy rain is likely to be at its worst. One of the greatest causes of drowning during times of flooding is people becoming trapped inside vehicles. So should you find yourself in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it as soon as possible.
