[WEATHER WARNING] Heavy Rain for Gauteng and KZN

On Monday, 11 April, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) expects heavy rain for the provinces of Gauteng and KZN. The department has released a level two weather warning for Gauteng, with the worst of the disruptive rain to be over by 2 pm. While SAWS has issued a level five warning for the rain in KZN, expected to last until midnight.

Expected Disruptions

SAWS predicts the rain in Gauteng to result in flooding of low lying areas, especially within susceptible informal settlements. Additionally, they warn of dangerous driving conditions, with slippery roads, the possibility of water pooling and poor visibility.

The announcement warns of more severe disruptions in the KZN region. SAWS advises the public to be aware of possible flooding which may result in damage to infrastructure and property. Furthermore, flooding of roads is expected to cause major disruptions of traffic flow, along with difficult driving conditions. Some roads may even be closed. Travelling individuals are to be especially aware of dirt roads where there is an increased chance of rockfalls and mudslides. The disruption of schools is also possible.

Instructions

Due to the heavy rain, SAWS advises residents of both Gauteng and KZN to stay indoors and away from flood areas. Also, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level. In the event that one needs to travel, SAWS urges the public to steer clear of fast-flowing and deep water as it may pose a threat to life. Avoid any water that is more than ankle-deep. Additionally, the warning states that the life of livestock near streams and rivers could be in danger. Therefore it is advised that animals are relocated to a safe space on higher ground.
