What is the R350 SRD Grant?
When South Africa first entered the National State of Disaster due to the Covid-19 pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa introduced the Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) of R350 per month.
The grant was meant to expire at the end of March 2022, however, during the 2022 State of the Nation Address (SONA), Ramaphosa confirmed that the grant will be extended until March 2023.
And when approved for the SRD grant, beneficiaries will receive payments of R350 for six months.
Who can apply?
Before applying for the SRD grant, applicants need to make sure that they are eligible.
All applicants need to meet the following criteria to be considered for the SASSA grant:
- Be a South African citizen OR Have permanent residents/refugees/asylum seekers/holders of special permits
- Be unemployed
- Have no alternative source of income or financial support
- Between ages 18 and 60
- Currently living in South Africa
And when applying, applicants will need to supply the following:
- Identity Number OR Department of Home Affairs Refugee permit number
- Name and Surname as captured in the Identity Document
- Gender and Disability
- Contact details (Cell phone number)
- Residential Address
All successful applicants will also have to provide banking details for the monthly payment or can opt for a cash transfer or collection at Post Offices.

When dates open for new applications, any of the following platforms are available to send SASSA R350 applications in:

- Email – srd@sassa.gov.za
- WhatsApp: 082 046 8553 (send a Whatsapp message to this number. Make sure to include your name, surname and ID number in the Whatsapp message. You will then receive a message which will detail the next steps you need to follow.)

SASSA requests that all applicants only apply once via one platform. SASSA will only process one application per person – does not matter if you applied on all platforms.
And finally, all applicants will be required to sign a declaration and consent form. This will give other institutions such as SARS and banks, permission to access your information.
