[WEATHER WARNING] Disruptive rain for Northern KZN

Although weather conditions are predicted to improve across the country over the next few days, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has released a level two alert for disruptive rain in northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The rain is expected to cover most of the northern parts of the province, starting just south of Richards bay and extending up to the northern border. SAWS estimates the worst of the rain to be over by 7 pm on Monday, 18 April.

Expected Disruptions

The alert warns residents of possible localised flooding, especially in susceptible settlements. Low lying bridges and roads may also be at risk of flooding. Plus, poor visibility and slippery roads may affect driving conditions. Furthermore, SAWS alerts of the possibility of soil erosion and mudslides, as well as damage to mud-based structures.  

Instruction

Northern KZN residents whose homes are within rain-affected areas are to move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level. As well as this, animals must be relocated to higher ground where they will be safe from flooding. Should anyone need to travel, they should avoid crossing water, especially if the water is above ankle depth. Additionally, potholes should be avoided as they could form sinkholes.
