Education quality assurance body, Umalusi, has confirmed that the matric results will be released on Thursday, with pupils able to receive their marks at schools on Friday.

This comes after reports that Umalusi asked for an extension from the Education Department to release the final marks.

A team of 52,811 markers began marking the National Senior Certificate examinations on December 10 until January 6.

Scores of matric learners are waiting patiently for their matric results.

According to education activist Hendrick Makaneta, despite having spent 12 years from grade one to grade twelve, some of the students were unable to complete their final school year for a variety of reasons.

“And this is a cause for a great concern, and there might be some reasons for this which the department has not adequately addressed, such as teenage pregnancy, employment, poverty, drugs, as well as criminal matters, which is also affecting learners in the terrain of education.”

Umalusi has assured that Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will announce 2022’s matric figures on Thursday.

Umalusi’s Biki Lepota said: “The minister will make her announcement on the 19th and learners, as far as the department is concerned, will be able to fetch their results early in the morning on the 20th. There has not been any request for an extension to next week as reported in the media.”

SADTU’s Mugwena Maluleka is urging parents to give support to learners as they await the release of their results. He says this may help minimize the level of anxiety.

“Our appeal therefore is that the people of our country just rally behind our students and their parents as they will be making choices about their future and give them the support that they require. As the people of this particular country, let us continue to be supportive of our teachers, our students, and our schools in order to improve the quality of our examination outcomes, in particular the matric results.”
