Anita Pointer sadly died in the days leading up to 2023. The singer first rose to fame with her sisters through their self-titled album in 1974.
Cause of death for Anita Pointer
In a statement released by her family, it shared that Anita died alongside her family. A representative shared with TMZ that the singer had died as a result of a long battle with cancer.
“While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter, Jada, and her sisters June and Bonnie, and at peace,”
Anita Pointer only birthed one child, Jada Pointer, who died years before her cancer battle ended. Her sisters, Bonnie and June also passed away in 2020 and 2006 respectively.
In 1969, The Pointer Sisters were officially formed by Anita, Bonnie, and June Pointer. The group rose to fame with their self-titled album, which secured the 13th spot in the Billboard 100 and was at No.3 on the R & B charts.

The Pointer Sisters are best known for their hits such as I’m So Excited, Fire, He’s So Shy, and Jump, to name a few. While the group obtained great success, the sisters also focussed on their solo careers.
After their success with Fairytale which Bonnie and Anita Pointer wrote, the latter would write another country song with artist Earl Thomas Conley. Their song titled Too Many Times reached No.2 on the Billboard hot country charts.
For their song Fairytale, the Pointer Sisters earned a Grammy Award. The Pointer Sisters are the only black female group to win a Grammy Award in the country music category to date.
Coming from a family of eight, Anita Pointer was the fourth of six children. She is survived by her sister Ruth, her brothers Aaron and Fritz, and her granddaughter Roxie.
