Even though the lockdown has been tough on Soweto's Finest, they are still trying to keep their dance studio alive by raising funds.

Soweto’s Finest has worked on major dance projects in the country, including starring and choreographing on Jiva! the Netflix series.

Members Nkululeko Nyembe, Tom London, and Njabulo Mahlaba opened their dance studio four years ago in Johannesburg. And since then they have helped so many people with this incredible dance talent, especially young children.

“The studio means we can change the lives of young African kids. Learners usually come over the weekends and it helps to get them off drugs and crime and many other self-destructive behaviours,” Soweto Finest’s member, Tom says.

The studio has gone through a rough patch since lockdown

Since lockdown has been implemented in South Africa due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Soweto’s Finest hit a rough patch.

“During the early days of the pandemic we were closed for more than two months and had no means of paying for rent,” the group says.

The group hosted a fundraiser last week however, after counting the money, it was stolen out of their office.

“We opened a case. We are not sure who might have stolen the money but people know that we have been struggling to keep the studio open and for them to just take our hard-earned money has been heart-breaking. But this too shall pass,” Tom adds.

Lady Du donates R10 000 to Soweto’s Finest

Hopefully, things will start to look up for the Soweto’s Finest members now that more and more people are aware of their situation.

On Wednesday, Lady Du took to Instagram to encourage her followers to reach out to the dance crew and help where possible.

“Yesterday was the first time I went to the studio ye Soweto’s finest, as a big sister I asked the boys how they are and they said devastated, they had a gig to raise funds to keep the business running some idiots stole it, and we all know with Covid-19 regulations it’s hard to keep the entertainment companies running.”

After her visit, the singer/songwriter decided to lend a helping hand and make a donation of her own.

“I decided, to help them out a bit but I feel like they’ve worked with so many people for years and know we can help somewhere. They work hard let’s help them get at least the funds they lost back. I sent them something myself so if y’all can too let’s help. We are building each other. I love these boys to bits.”
