As Heritage Day weekend comes to an end, it is important to keep remembering the importance of the day and not limit the celebrations to one weekend. And Muvhango actor, David Sebe, did just that by encouraging the youth of SA to never forget their roots.

“A generation without identity is a lost generation.”

According to Sebe, who plays Gizara on the popular show, Heritage is one of the most precious things we have. And he believes that languages form a huge part of South Africans’ heritage.

“Our culture and our heritage define our present and future. As we celebrate Heritage Day, I ask parents, especially parents, to teach their children about their heritage, who they are, and where they are coming from,” he says.

The veteran Muvhango actor believes that it is important for the future generation to conserve languages since some of them are on the brink of extinction.

“Already in some homes, black people speak English. Some of their children cannot even speak their parents’ indigenous languages. As we celebrate Heritage Day let us go back to the drawing board and revisit the issue of our indigenous languages. “

He ended his message by urging the youth to not be ashamed of their heritage. “Do not diminish who you are, heritage is your identity, without heritage you are subjected to exploitation.”
