It’s the Festive Season! And for many, this means fireworks season too. And even though there are strict fireworks laws in South Africa, these laws do not always stay enforced. Thus, some reckless firework usage can be expected during this time of year. And sadly, this means that for many animals, it’s a time of terror.
Fireworks are not the same as thunderstorms
Many people argue that animals shouldn’t be afraid of fireworks because they are similar to thunderstorms. However, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital shared more insight regarding this topic, explaining why fireworks and thunderstorms are not the same for animals.
“[Fireworks] is NOT the same as a thunderstorm with thunder and lightning. Animals know long in advance when a storm is approaching – they can hear much better than us and can sense the change in barometric pressure. Pets that are noise phobic often show signs of fear even before there are clouds visible.” – Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital
