For the first time in the 37-year history of this esteemed event, a Chinese product has received such recognition.

Introduced in November 2022, the BEIJING X55 has already made a remarkable impact on the market. During the rigorous testing days of this year’s COTY finalists, the jurors were immensely impressed by its unbeatable value for money, exceptional performance and remarkable fuel efficiency.

The BEIJING X55 boasts an impressive array of innovative technological specifications, a wide range of active and passive safety features, and a captivating, sporty design that guarantees an extraordinarily comfortable driving experience.

With six Airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), BOS (Brake Override System), ESP (Electronic Stability Program), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control), HDC (Hill Decent Control), a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and a Drowsy Driver Warning System, the BEIJING X55 prioritises uncompromising safety.

It also includes convenient features such as Keyless Entry, Reverse Camera, and front & rear Park Distance Control, making daily commuting a breeze. In addition, two ISOFIX baby seat mounting points and speed-induction door locks enhance its impressive safety credentials.

“The BEIJING X55’s design resulted in the lowest NVH performance in its class, and its extensive list of safety features for peace-of-mind motoring led to this compact family SUV being awarded the C-NCAP Five-star Safety Design,” says Basil Costa, Business Development Director at BAIC South Africa.

Powered by a 1.5-litre VGT turbocharged petrol engine producing 130 kW and 305 Nm and coupled with a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission, the BEIJING X55 delivers exceptional performance, drivability and control for a compact SUV. Its super-responsive Euro VI engine enables it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. Despite its exceptional performance, this award-winning engine boasts a class-leading fuel consumption of only 7.7 litres/100 km.

The BEIJING X55’s revolutionary sports styling is bound to turn heads on the road. Its Smart Technology, combined with Zero-gravity Integrated sports seats, ensures a comfortable environment for drivers and passengers. An intelligent Bionic side design, LED headlights, C-type Daytime Running Lights, LED taillights, split rear wing and a Panoramic sunroof further accentuate its sporty credentials.

Inside, the BEIJING X55 offers a spacious and comfortable environment with ample leg and headroom for the driver and passengers. A multi-function steering wheel with four-way adjustment and an automatic air-conditioner with rear air vents guarantee a comfortable and relaxing drive.

The ergonomically asymmetrical-designed centre console, 10.25-inch LCD instrument screen, and 10.1-inch centre control screen create an easy-to-navigate sporty cockpit. It features a user-friendly CarbitLink infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity for cellphone pairing. The two 12V charging ports and three USB ports in the front and rear ensure you are always powered and connected.

“BAIC South Africa takes immense pride in offering the BEIJING X55 to the South African market. With its extraordinary blend of cutting-edge technology, superior performance, impeccable safety credentials, and a comfortable yet sporty interior, we firmly believe that the BEIJING X55 is an exceptional addition to any family wanting to buy a compact SUV,” says Mr Hugo Hu, Vice President of BAIC SA.

Mr Hu adds that BAIC South Africa proudly boasts 38 dealerships nationwide, showcasing the company’s unwavering commitment to excellence. “Embracing growth, we set our sights on reaching 50 reputable dealerships by the end of 2023.”

Additionally, plans are underway to increase the production capacity of BAIC South Africa’s manufacturing plant in Gqeberha, enabling the company to implement its strategy of exporting locally assembled vehicles to African markets.

”We are thrilled that the BEIJING X55 has won its category in the South African Car of the Year competition. This achievement is a testament to our commitment to providing our customers with high-quality vehicles that offer great value for money,” says Mr Hu. “We extend our deepest gratitude for bestowing this prestigious award upon us and are humbled and honoured to be recognised by such a distinguished panel of jurors.”

The BEIJING X55 range comprises three derivatives, Dynamic, Elite and Premium, with the official retail price starting at R420 900. It offers a five-year/150 000 km warranty, a five-year/60 000 km Service Plan and five-year/unlimited-kilometre AA roadside assistance. It also offers an extended seven-year/200 000 km drivetrain warranty.
