DA calls on the SIU to probe the ANC’s R780 000 donation for donkey carts in the North West

20 carts came with a R780 000 price tag, with carts priced between R32 500 and R45 500 each, which is highly overpriced.

The Democratic Alliance has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to instruct the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe a dodgy donkey carts donation in the North West.

Reacting to the trendy topic, the party wrote: “The DA is appalled by the North West government’s ‘donation’ of 20 donkey carts at an exorbitant price of R780 000.”

“The ANC in the province has failed to invest in critical infrastructure and public transport- municipalities have returned R138 million in unspent conditional grants.”

The reaction by the DA comes after the public took to social media to scrutinize the project.

Chris Hunsinger, the DA transport spokesperson said that 20 carts came with a R780 000 price tag, with carts priced between R32 500 and R45 500 each, which is highly overpriced.

The North West government apparently “donated” carts to some residents in the Manawana and Dibono villages outside Mahikeng as a mode of transport to shops, clinics, and a school which is 20 kilometres away in a neighbouring village.

“Not only does this ‘donation’ smack of brazen corruption, it also is a clear indication of the ANC’s complete disregard for the needs and dignity of these residents. The 20 donkey carts are supposedly meant as a mode of transport to clinics, shops, and schools for local residents,” said Hunsinger.

He said the ANC had failed to address the needs of the people as it decide to purchase 20 donkey carts. The party failed to invest in ambulances and proper transport infrastructure in the province, and patients were being gifted with carts to use as means of transportation.

“This while Cabinet Ministers drive around in luxurious cars. The brazen way the ANC government tries to cover up their own shortcomings over the last almost three decades through this kind of stunt is sickening,” said Hunsinger.
