The Eldorado Park community has been without electricity for days, due to rampant cable theft in the area.

Eldorado Park plunged in darkness

City Power released a statement on Wednesday confirming that technicians have been deployed to attend to the outage in extension 8 and 10.

“The outage is as a result of cable theft in the area. The incident occurs exactly eight days after the last incident of similar nature in the same area,” City Power revealed.

Unfortunately for residents of the affected regions in Eldorado Park, no estimated time of recovery (ETR) has been confirmed at this time.

“The two extensions will remain without power supply until the stolen cable is replaced. Unfortunately, ETR hasn’t been established as yet,” the statement continued.

Loadshedding to persist all week

Apart from the self-inflicted outage faced by the Eldorado Park community, the rest of South Africa will have to deal with another week of rotational power outages.

Shortly after firing off warning shots on Tuesday, Eskom placed South Africa on stage 2 loadshedding until Wednesday 05:00, citing mounting breakdowns at its flailing power stations as the reason.

While planned maintenance was reduced to 3 451MW, it still was not enough to keep the power grid stable since breakdowns at Kusile, Matimba and Arnot contributed towards the 17 933MW not feeding into the system.

“The constraints are expected to persist for the rest of the week, which may require the loadshedding to be extended,” the power utility warned.

Eskom urged the public “to continue using electricity sparingly.”
