Flotilla Fighters Freed: DIRCO’s Jordan Update & Local Healing

Six South African activists detained by Israeli forces after joining the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza have been released and are on their way home via Jordan. DIRCO confirmed their safe transit as local communities prepare holistic wellness rituals and healing circles to support their recovery. Their return not only marks a diplomatic victory but also reaffirms South Africa’s enduring solidarity with Palestine and commitment to global justice.

Flotilla Fighters Freed: DIRCO’s Jordan Update & Local Healing

In a relief-filled development, six South African activists detained by Israeli authorities following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla have been released and are en route home. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirms they have safely arrived in Jordan and will be flown back to South Africa soon. Meanwhile, activist networks across the country are preparing wellness initiatives to help them recover from their ordeal.

Detention to Deportation: The Release Journey

The Global Sumud Flotilla, a collective of humanitarian activists navigating to Gaza in defiance of Israel’s naval blockade, was intercepted in disputed waters. Hundreds of participants—including the six South Africans—were detained by Israeli forces before diplomatic pressure opened the path to their release.

On 6 October 2025, DIRCO issued a media statement confirming that the South African activists were cleared for deportation via Jordan, and later confirmed their safe arrival in Jordan, where the South African Ambassador received them upon entry.

The delegation is scheduled to land at O.R. Tambo International Airport on the morning of 9 October. DIRCO stated that while it facilitated diplomatic processes, families and solidarity networks played a key role in supporting their return.

Who Are the Six Activists?

  • Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela (Mandla Mandela): Grandson of Nelson Mandela, known for his outspoken advocacy on justice issues.
  • Zukiswa Wanner: Acclaimed author and social activist, often amplifying marginalized voices.
  • Reaaz Moola: Veteran human rights organiser, grounded in grassroots resistance.
  • Dr Zaheera Soomar: Medical professional advocating for equity in conflict zones.
  • Dr Fatima Hendricks: Community leader focused on women’s rights and peacebuilding.
  • Carrie Shelver: Environmental and social justice campaigner, bridging global solidarity efforts.

The six were part of a broader flotilla including over 400 international participants. Their arrest sparked vocal protests and solidarity marches across South Africa, including a large “Walk for Freedom” in Lenasia.

Welcoming Back: Wellness & Community Care

As they prepare for their return, activist networks across the country are orchestrating holistic welcome programs aimed at supporting the physical and psychological recuperation of the freed detainees. These “wellness wraps” combine traditional healing practices with communal solidarity rituals.

Grounding Through Yoga: Lushiba Flow Sessions

Drawing inspiration from Leshiba Wilderness in Limpopo—famed for its eco-yoga retreats—the returning activists are scheduled to engage in gentle yoga and breathwork sessions. Facilitators blending African mindfulness techniques with Vinyasa-style flows aim to help restore energetic balance and release trauma. Community instructors emphasize that this practice is more than physical: it’s an act of reconnection.

Debrief in Lenasia: Healing Circles Over Food

In Lenasia, organizers plan debrief dinners—safe, intimate spaces where activists, their families, and supporters can share their stories over home-cooked meals like biryani and roti. Organized by local groups such as the Palestine Solidarity Alliance, these gatherings mirror post-protest healing rituals, mixing nourishment with emotional reconciliation. “In Lenasia, we march and heal together,” affirmed a community organizer.

These events extend beyond the six activists, opening doors to families and solidarity groups to reinforce communal bonds and mutual care.

A Moment to Reflect, Not to Rest

The activists’ safe return underscores South Africa’s role in global justice and humanitarian diplomacy. As DIRCO continues its engagement toward a Gaza ceasefire, these wellness initiatives remind us that activism must be paired with self-care.

While their homecoming will be watched closely, their journey also calls for renewed solidarity—not just in protest, but in care. As one returning activist reportedly said, “Freedom is not just a destination; it’s a daily practice.” May their strength inspire the next wave of action.
