The education department in Gauteng anticipates completing the admission and pupils will be placed in schools by the end of January.

As the new school year beings, more than 1300 Gauteng school pupils are still seeking placement.

At a Gauteng Department of Education school readiness and online admission update on Tuesday, Education MEC Matome Chiloane revealed that 290,7511 pupils had been placed in schools in the province. Another 1394 remain unplaced.

In Ekurhuleni North, 236 Grad 1 applicants have not been placed in Olifantsfontein and 501 pupils in Grade 8 have not been placed in Kempton Park.

In Tshwane West, 233 Grade 8 pupils have not been placed in Akasia, and 434 Grade 8 applicants have not been placed in Johannesburg West.

He emphasised that he was working tirelessly to ensure that the children were allocated places as soon as possible.

One parent, Sicelile Xulu, told the Mali & Guardian that she had a problem with the application system.

“I do not understand why the manual system of applying was ended, it was better going to the school and getting assisted by another human being. I struggle with network connection when applying online because in our area the network gets bad during load shedding,” Xulu said.

The MEC said the department had plans in place to address admission pressure and overcrowding and ensure that the 2023 school year proceeded as planned. He said four new schools were scheduled to open this year. One of them in Ga-rankua on Wednesday.

Another plan is infrastructure renovations. The MEC said maintenance had been carried out at 488 schools since last October, and funds had been allocated for building additional classes at 297 schools. Some 878 schools were currently being built, he added.
