Following recent devastating floods which ravaged the City of Johannesburg, the Hendrick Potgieter Road in Roodepoort collapsed on Tuesday after the heavy rains damaged the stormwater channel.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said Hendrick Potgieter Road was closed near Raceworx KTM after a part of the road collapsed.

“This is a provincial road, and Gautrans (Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport) has secured the area, and engineers are undertaking structural assessments. Gauteng province transport will provide updates,” Peters -Scheepers said.

She said Albertina Sisulu Road between Westlake Road and Fourth Road in Florida was also closed to traffic as a precautionary measure following the recent floods.

She said: “JRA teams are attending to the matter and will reopen the road as soon as it is safe for road users. In the meantime, motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Meanwhile, Councillor Zone Hughes visited the site on Tuesday, joined by representatives from the Gauteng Department of Road and Transport, and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

She said they were waiting for contractors and engineers to arrive.

“They are also trying to get more measures in place to ensure that on one passes the barriers,” Hues added.

A sinkhole has formed on Jim Fouche Road at an intersection of Phil Allen Avenue and the run road is particularly closed.

Peters-Scheepers said a bridge on Kilburn Street and Wilgerood Road in Roodepoort also collapsed, and traffic was being diverted.

Other road closures include the Ndaba Street bridge at Mapetla Park and Protea South and the Pakoe Street bridge in Naledi.

Earlier the South African Weather Service (SAWS) moved its warning for the City of Joburg from level 5 to level 2 thunderstorms.
