A 17-year-old teenager was allegedly raped by a police officer, who was meant to interview her on an assault case that she had opened against her boyfriend.

The incident allegedly happened at Kei Mouth police station in the Eastern Cape.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the 45-year-old police officer from Kei Mouth police station in East London, was arrested after he allegedly raped the teenage girl on 6 August.

Lizzy Suping, the IPID spokesperson said the suspect was arrested by the police watchdog on Friday, 19 August. He has since resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

On the day of the incident, the suspect allegedly collected the 17-year-old teenage victim from her home on 6 August for an interview at the police station after she opened a case of assault against her boyfriend.

“On the way to the police station, the suspect made some sexual advances to the victim, which she rejected. At the police station the suspect took the victim to an office where he allegedly raped her,” said Suping.

Garcia Langa, another IPID spokesperson said the teenager escaped from the suspect after she bit his left shoulder and hit him over the head with a bottle until it broke. She then stabbed the suspect with a bottle and threw his cellphone against the call.

When the suspect picked up his phone, the victim ran from his office and into the Kei Mouth Community Service Centre (CSC) where she told the on-duty officer what had occurred and opened a case against the police officer.
