Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 32-year-old Fort Hare University employee was found tied up and gagged in his apartment.

It is understood that his colleagues went to his flat to check on him after he did not report for duty at work on Wednesday.

The police said although the man was not injured he was rushed to hospital. On Wednesday a case of attempted murder was opened.

The incident comes two weeks after the attempt on the life of the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, in the same neighbourhood, during which his bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele, was killed.

Police said there is no link between this incident and the attempted assassination of Buhlungu.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Bembinkosi Kinana said: “According to reports, the victim was noticed missing by his colleagues after he did not report at work.

“They then went to his flat, where they eventually found him, his hands were tied and his mouth was bound with Sellotape.”

Kinana said the victim was then rushed to a nearby hospital after they noticed that he was not well.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. No injuries were reported.”

Kinana said no arrests have been made at this stage.

“It must be noted that the SAPS does not relate or associate this incident with previous incidents which were reported and associated with Fort Hare University employees.”

In May 2022, the university’s transport manager, Petrus Roets, was shot and killed near a traffic light on his way home from work.

There have been growing calls for the security at Fort Hare University to be improved as employees are not safe.
