Bulk water supplier Rand Water says it will have to institute a 30-hour emergency shutdown due to a major burst on the A6 pipeline.

The pipeline supplies water from Vereeniging purification works to Zwartkopjes pumpstation.

While Rand Water and Joburg Water infrastructure say they will have maximum capacity during the shutdown from 6pm on Friday, several reservoirs, towers and direct feeds will be affected should water drop to critical levels due to the pipeline burst.

“It’s estimated that the duration of the outage will be for 30 hours. Rand Water and Johannesburg Water infrastructure (towers and reservoirs) will have maximum capacity during the shutdown.

“However, the following reservoirs, towers and direct feeds will be affected, should the water level drop to critical levels,” the utility said.

Affected reservoirs and towers include Forsthill tower and Berea, Hursthill, Parktown and Crown Gardens reservoirs.

The reservoirs supply water to various parts of Johannesburg including Oakdene, Auckland Park, Parktown, Linksfield, Hillbrowand surrounding areas.

Forest Hill tower zone includes:

Oakdene, parts of Rosettenville, Kenilworth, The Hill, Towerby, Linmeyer, Southdale, Foresthill, Townsvie, Robertsham, Gillview, Winchester Hills, Chrisville, Turf Club, Glenanda, Turfonteinand Klipriviersberg estate.

Crown Gardens reservoir zone includes:

Southdale, Boysens Reserve, Ormonde, Mondeo, Nasrec, Ophirton, Lake View, Selby, Evans Park, Robertsham, Winchester Hills, Reuven, Ridgeway, Theta and Selby South.

Puleng Mopedi, the Johannesburg Water spokesperson said: “Water will be isolated today, 04 November 2022 at 18:00 to effect repairs. Both entities’ infrastructure will have maximum capacity during the showdown, however, this will affect the Joburg CBD and some parts of the south.

“Johannesburg water encourages residents to reduce consumption and use water for human and household needs, which will significantly assist in sustaining supply of the affected systems.”
