Six people have been killed in two separate shooting incidents in Cape Town. On Wednesday morning, two unknown men were shot dead near a primary school as learners and parents ran for cover, and on Tuesday night four people were killed during a shooting, allegedly linked to extortion, in Khayelitsha.

The two shooting incidents happened in Cape Town- the first happened around 7pm on Tuesday and the second near Steenberg Primary School in in Steenberg around 8am on Wednesday.

The first mass shooting in Khayelitsha occurred on Tuesday at 7pm in Site B when gunmen stormed a local supermarket in Sulani Drive. Four people were shot and three died on the scene. According to Brigadier Novela Potelwa, the provincial spokesperson, the identities of the victims was not yet confirmed.

“Khayelitsha police have opened murder dockets for investigation following an incident where three men were shot dead, a fourth one seriously injured and later succumbed in hospital to injuries sustained on Tuesday evening. Reports from the scene indicate that unknown gunmen entered the Madiba supermarket in R588 Sulani Drive, Site B, and fired several shots at 7pm,” Potelwa said.

In the Khayelitsha massacre, the four victims of the shooting in a supermarket are Somalian nationals and the murder appears to be linked to an extortion racket plaguing the community. The two unknown men who were killed in the Steenberg shooting, died from what appear to have been a hit.

The Khayelitsha massacre has raised concern over threats of retaliation and could spark further violence in the area. Community leaders have called for more interventions to prevent bloodshed.
