R350 SRD grant has cost taxpayers billions
According to The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), it has cost taxpayers R45 billion to pay the R350 social relief grant since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The grant has been paid to approximately 10.5 million South Africans since the start of April 2020.
During his State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed the extension of the R350 grant for another year.
However, according to SASSA, they are currently unable to predict how much the next 12 months will cost taxpayers.
NICD investigates Typhoid outbreaks
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) are busy investigating the typhoid outbreaks in the Western Cape and the North West. These regions are currently suffering from increased cases.
The Western Cape currently has 64 reported cases of typhoid fever, with 18 cases in the North West and 45 cases in Gauteng. Despite Gauteng having a higher number of cases, the NICD said it is distributed quite extensively in the province and that there is no distinct or localised outbreak.
Miss SA’s Lalela Mswane is once again drawn into controversy
The Miss SA organisers have announced that Lalela Mswane will be representing the country at this year’s Miss Supranational. However, this announcement was not perceived well as Mzansi called the organisers out for once again choosing Mswane.
Miss SA has started a tradition where the top three finalists of the pageant each get a turn to represent SA at the world’s most prestigious pageants – Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Supranational.
However, none of the other two finalists – Moratwe Masima and Zimi Mabunzi – gave been chosen.
