Smuggling scandal among Johannesburg police
An ongoing investigation into the Johannesburg police station has made its way to Parliament. Last January, 150 firearms were missing after the department came under new management.
Since then, more police stations across the country are being audited to determine if any more firearms that are meant to be locked up are missing.
During a briefing on Wednesday, police bosses were meant to give an update on the situation. And according to the police, “disciplinary proceedings” have been instituted against several officers. Furthermore, an inquiry into the disappearance of the guns will point to a criminal investigation.
State-owned companies to prove themselves post budget speech
During his first annual budget speech yesterday, Finance minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the future of state-owned companies (SOCs) in South Africa will be determined by the value they create and whether they can be run sustainably without bailouts for the fiscus.
From now on, it is up to SOCs to develop their own plans in order to reduce how much they rely on South Africa’s limited public resources.
Most SOCs were not given any bailouts in the budget speech. And for the rest of the SOCs, government support will be contingent on them meeting specific criteria. And this criterion will be announced in the coming year.
Alcohol industry and liquor traders association “disappointed” after budget speech
The alcohol industry is not too happy with the Treasury’s decision to hit them with higher taxes in the budget speech.
Ahead of the speech, the groups pleaded with the government to skip taxes for 2022. However, this did not seem to help as the industry was hit with hikes between 4.5% and 6.5%.
