NERSA grants Eskom a 9.61% tariff hike
On Thursday, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) granted Eskom an electricity tariff hike of 9.61%.
Originally, Eskom applied to receive a total increase of 20.5% as well as an allowable revenue of R279 billion, but Nersa set it to R250 billion instead. This decision, however, still leaves serious questions about Eskom’s sustainability. And, according to analysts, the revenue shortfall will force the power utility to either borrow more money or cut maintenance spending.
The increase will take effect from 1 April 2022 for Eskom users and from 1 July for municipal users. The increase will be valid for the financial year of 2022/2023.
Vaccine mandates in universities
Several large universities in South Africa have implemented Covid vaccine policies for 2022, however many have been met with resistance and protests from students.
Higher education minister, Blade Nzimande, feels that universities should be guided by the Constitution when deciding on mandatory vaccines.
And up till now, the government hasn’t made a set decision regarding mandatory vaccines, and rather leave it up to private businesses and organisations to determine their own rules regarding the matter.
Ukraine’s response to Russia’s invasion
In response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, President Zelenskyy has made it clear that Ukraine would rather not fight.
“We have no need for another Cold War, or a bloody war, or a hybrid war.”
However, the president adds that the independence of Ukraine will not be taken away. And “if we come under attack, if we face an attempt to take away our country, our freedom, our lives and lives of our children, we will defend ourselves. When you attack us, you will see our faces, not our backs.”
