Price Hikes for March: South Africans are warned
The Russian attack on the Ukraine has caused huge havoc on the global market which could push fuel prices to a new high. Investec’s chief economist Annabel Bishop shared in a note, “The petrol price, already at R20/litre, could jump to R25/litre in the near term. A R1.26/litre increase is building for March – a figure that would be would be significantly higher were it not for some rand strength earlier in the month”.
Electricity will also become more expensive as The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approved a 9.6% tariff increase for Eskom.

Limpopo approves $10 Billion Coal Complex
Environmental authorization has been given to a China-backed proposal on Wednesday. They are planning to spend more than $10 billion to build a 4,600 megawatt coal-fired power plant, a coking facility and ferroalloy and steel plants.
This project may still be opposed by the government at a national level and will draw opposition from activists concerned about its impact on thousands of Baobab trees, which take hundred of years to grow, water supplies and air pollution.
