South Africans can volunteer to join Ukraine in the war against Russia
On Friday, Ukraine’s ambassador to South Africa, Liubov Abravitova, revealed that any South African who are willing to join the fight against Russia can now do so. And, reportedly, there has already been “hundreds” of requests received at the Pretoria embassy.
Abravitova added that volunteers should be patient while the legality of the recruitment is decided by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
Furthermore, it has been reported that over 16 000 fighters from 52 countries have already volunteered and joined Ukraine against Russia.
Kulula and British Airways leaves passengers stranded across South Africa
Over the weekend, hundreds of passengers were left stranded at airports across South Africa after Comair’s operating licence got suspended. And both Kulula and British Airways fall under Comair.
The suspension came as a huge blow and removed about 40% of its operational capacity. According to reports, the Civil Aviation Authority suspended Comair’s operating licence indefinitely due to “non-compliance with safety regulations”.
And while unions are calling for the group’s CEO to resign, transport minister Fikile Mbalula supports the decision to ground the airways for now as the safety concerns are dealt with.
No more extensions for driver’s licence rewewals available
According to Gauteng Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo, no leniency will be given to motorists who are caught driving with an expired licence card. And from April, fines and possible prosecution will be the new norm.
No more extensions will be granted since the traffic department can allegedly process all applications – including the backlog of 500 000 cards.
Mamabolo added that if they were to extend the licence grace period, it would have come with “unintended consequences”.
