President Ramaphosa to visit flooded KZN today
President Cyril Ramaphosa will be visiting KwaZulu-Natal today after days of ongoing hard rain that caused flooding, mudslides and death. Thus far, at least 59 people have died and hundreds are now homeless.
Ramaphosa is set to offer support and assess how government and civil society need to handle the situation. Premier Sihle Zikalala is calling for a state of disaster for the province, however, Ramaphosa will first have to assess.
According to the KZN disaster management department, more than 2000 houses and 4000 “informal” homes were either damaged or completely destroyed.
Debt level of SA consumers on the rise
According to a recent study by Genesis Analytics, South Africa’s debt level is rising when it comes to consumers.
In partnership with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority, the company found that more than 50% of credit-active consumers can be considered to be heavily indebted. This has then resulted in bad credit records for 48% of borrowers.
And nearly 50% of the 27 million adults who use credit, have difficulty keeping up with repayments. And 95% of low-income citizens are using debt to pay for basics like food.
Be prepared for Easter Weekend traffic and roadblocks
As South Africa’s most popular long weekend approaches, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has sent out a warning of caution to all citizens who are travelling on the roads this Easter Weekend. And he urges all motorists to drive with caution as many routes will be manned by law enforcement over the weekend.
