Ramaphosa to mediate between Ukraine and Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has tweeted that he and President Cyril Ramaphosa had a phone conversation on Wednesday 20 April.
This highly anticipated phone call comes after South Africa has tried to remain neutral regarding the Russian conflict, even after being criticised as siding with the aggressor.
And now Ramaphosa has offered to act as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia.
Durban port is open for business after floods
After the severe and devastating floods KwaZulu-Natal suffered last week, South Africa’s busiest port in Durban has officially been re-opened.
According to Moshe Motlohi, the managing executive for the Eastern Ports of KZN, ships have returned to their schedules of coming and going, however, a landslide has reduced entry to the port and trucks and trains are still unable to reach the port.
Motlothi further added that there is a backlog of over 8000 containers that still need to enter the South African market as imports.
KZN flood victims can apply for SASSA’s SRD Disaster Grant
As part of the government’s social relief intervention, SASSA has increased grants for those in need. The agency further explained that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants are meant to “provide temporary assistance” to victims of a crisis or disaster.
If approved, beneficiaries of the SRD Disaster Grant will receive funding from SASSA for 1 month to fulfil the basic needs of their families.
