Experts warn of the start of 5th wave as Covid cases increase
According to the latest numbers of daily Covid-19 infections in South Africa, there is a sharp increase in positive cases. And the highest number that has been recorded in recent days is 4 406 positive cases – which is a 15.8% increase.
Analysts have since warned that this could be the start of the fifth Covid wave, which was originally forecasted to hit the end of April/early May.
However, there has not yet been any indication that a new variant has been found, but instead, the Omicron variant remains the most common.
KZN’s economy lost R737 million due to floods
The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry has worked out that Durban city has lost an estimated R737 million so far due to the devastating floods. This amount excludes the replacement value of properties.
According to the chamber, the government needs to restore water to key business nodes as soon as possible, otherwise, an economic collapse can be expected.
Wimbledon bans Russian players from 2022 tournament
On Wednesday 20 April, the All England Club announced the ban of Russian and Belarusian players from the 2022 Wimbledon tournament running from 27 June to 10 July.
Following their statement, both the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) expressed disapproval of the decision. While many players have also voiced objections, including Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, a six-time men’s singles champion at Wimbledon.
