Government “under-reporting” Covid-19 deaths
The National Department of Health has admitted that there is a chance that the government may be under-reporting deaths caused by Covid-19.
The department was previously dismissive of compelling research that showed “significant excess deaths”. But now a ground of scientists in the South African Medical Research Council’s Burden of Disease Research Unit has estimated that 302 960 excess deaths from natural causes happened in SA in the past two years. And 80% (240 000) of these deaths were caused by Covid-19.
Nelson Mandela Bay faces a hunger crisis
Communities in Nelson Mandela Bay are fighting a losing battle against hunger – with hundreds of children receiving treatment for severe acute malnutrition.
In the past 15 months, there have been 14 children under the age of five that starved to death and another 216 cases of severe acute malnutrition.
And according to the University of Cape Town’s Child Institute, roughly 48% of child hospital deaths are moderate or severe acute malnutrition.
Joburg CBD power outage UPDATE
City Power has warned that, due to the underground fire that took place in the CBD earlier this week, some residents might be in the dark for the next five days.
The fire broke out on Monday in an underground tunnel and areas affected by the outage include Selby, parts of Booysens and Westgate.
“Estimated time of restoration can only be given once the teams have details about the extent of the repairs needed. The prolonged outage may take about five days. Investigation into the cause of the fire is also still ongoing, but we do not rule out anything at this stage.”
