Dlamini-Zuma warns: The National State of Disaster could come back sooner than we think
Not even 24 hours had passed since President Cyril Ramaphosa declared the National State of Disaster to be over and we are already being warned that it could be re-implemented.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has warned that in the case the amount of Covid-19 infections increases, the government could declare a national state of disaster again.
For now, South Africa will stay in a 30-day post-disaster management period as the country tries to transition to a “normal” state again. The period will be “legislated accordingly” as Dlamini Zuma says the Disaster Management Act (DMA) “cannot be used permanently as it’s of temporary use”.
The Judicial Service Commission is interviewing candidates
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and the Judicial Service Commission are looking for two candidates to fill vacancies at the Constitutional Court. And four of the five judges’ interviews went smoothly. But when it came to Acting Justice David Unterhalter, things took a turn.
Unterhalter was questioned about why he had not “rescued himself” from a case where he served in the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA). He served in the appeal process and the dismissal of the appeal filed to the Constitutional Court.
When he realised his error, Unterhalter claimed that he made a “regrettable error” and took full responsibility for not noticing.
SAMA pushes for vaccine drives
The South African Medical Association (SAMA) is pushing the government to increase SA’s vaccination drive since lifting the national state of disaster.
According to SAMA, South Africa’s vaccination rate has “plateaued”. And if more people get vaccinated, the economy would also benefit, says SAMA.
