South Africa once again abstain from voting against Russia
For the third time now, South Africa has abstained from voting on a UN resolution against Russia as a means to stop the Ukraine conflict. This time, the vote was meant to suspend Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council.
A total of 93 countries were in favour and 24 were against the suspension. And a total of 58 countries abstained from voting.
According to the ambassador of South Africa to the UN, the resolution against Russia would only further divide and polarise the matter and the General Assembly. And Dirco Minister Naledi Pandor said the abstention does not indicate South Africa condoning Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Vodacom warns that data can get more expensive
Vodacom, South Africa’s biggest mobile network, has warned that the proposed amendment of bundle expiry rules could make data more expensive in the long run.
Icasa has recently published its amendment regulations and stated that all data, voice, and SMS bundles only expire after six months.
However, according to Vodacom, it currently offers data with shorter expiry ties at a much lower cost. And the new legislation would thus force the network operator to remove these packages.
Billions needed to restore SA’s sewage and wastewater facilities
According to the 2022 Green Drop Report, it will take over R8 billion in order to restore the country’s sewage and wastewater facilities to “basic functionality”.
After auditing over 850 plants over the country, it found that more than 60% of SA’s sewage and wastewater treatment plants have been classified as “poor to critical”.
Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu stated that the department would take action against municipalities and managers as soon as possible.
