North West traditional healer found guilty of murder after setting girlfriend alight and stabbing her while alive

Henry Mamothame, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson said 29-year-old Thapelo Ramoruki was found guilty on Monday for the murder of Tsholofelo Tsheko last year in January and pointing a firearm.

“It is alleged that on 12 January 2021, Ramoruki, who is a traditional healer, together with Tsheko, their one-month-old baby and Tsheko’s younger brother drove to Sandfontein cemetery to perform a ritual for his child.

Mamothame said the traditional healer took with him a pellet gun, traditional beer and a knife for that purpose. They preformed the ritual at the cemetery and moved to a nearby dam to cleanse themselves before they headed home.

While at the dam, Ramoruki pointed the gun at Tsheko and told her to hand over the two children. He told Tsholofelo’s younger brother to go and wait in the car with the child. He them pour petrol on Tsheko and set her alight. He went on to stab her in the abdominal section while she was burning, Mamothame said.

Police were called to the violent scene and Ramoruki was arrested on the scene. Tsheko was rushed to Kotane Hospital, but she succumbed to her wounds the next day.

Judge Tebogo Djadje found Ramoruki guilty of murder and he would remain in police custody until sentencing on Wednesday. The suspect was acquitted on the charge of kidnapping and unlawful possession of a firearm.
