The Western Cape now accounts for 22% of new Covid-19 cases in SA in the last 24-hours. This is according to statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).
This now means that the province is second in the amount of daily new infections. KwaZulu-Natal is first with 26% of new infections recorded coming from the province.
With an influx of holiday goers over the Festive Season, the Western Cape and KZN now account for almost 50% of all new cases in South Africa.
Cases are falling in Gauteng
In Gauteng, new infections continue to fall with the province reporting 21% of new infections coming from the province. This is a relief for the province, as it was considered one of the “hotspots” for the new Omicron variant.
Latest Covid-19 cases roundup
On Tuesday, a total of 15 424 new cases were recorded. This brought the country’s total cases to 3 332 008 since the first case in early 2020.
This now represents a 27.6% positivity rate in SA.
Furthermore, 35 more deaths have been recorded due to Covid-19, bringing the country’s fatalities since the start of the pandemic to 90 488.
On Tuesday, a “sharp increase” was seen in the number of people admitted to hospital. And the latest stats are now showing that a further 633 people are receiving treatment for complications due to the virus.
