Women’s month got off to a bad start on Monday after a woman’s body was found dumped in a dirt bin in small section of Old Crossroads in Nyanga, Cape Town.

Captain Frederick van Wyk, the police spokesperson, said the body was found at a premises in Old Crossroads on Monday morning.

Van Wyk said: “According to reports, the people occupying the house heard a dirt bin being pushed onto their premises. They looked outside and saw a man pushing the bin. When they asked what he was doing on their premises, he left the dirt bin and ran off. When the dirt bin was opened, the body was found.”

Community members said they didn’t recognise the woman, who was wearing a black floral shirt and charcoal jeans. She was barefoot and her face was badly injured.

Dumisani Qwebe, the Nyanga Community Police Forum Secretary said the body was already decomposing, leading them to believe she’s been killed few days earlier. “She had been kept at a house nearby before she was taken to this area to be dumped,” he said.

“We condemn this and ask the city to find a new system instead of the wheelie bins because they are used for such purposes. We are going to have to stand up as men in this community and protect women, especially since it is Women’s Month.

“We would like to urge all those families with a missing young lady to come forward to the Nyanga police,” Qwebe added.

Van Wyk said a murder case was opened and no arrests have been made.
