Croatia reached the semi-finals of the World Cup yet again after they defeated the pre-tournament favourites Brazil on penalties sending superstar Neymar out in tears.
Croatia stunned Brazil to reach the semi-finals on Friday, winning 4-2 on penalties after a nail biting last-eight tie finished 1-1 at the end of extra time.
After a goalless 90 minutes, Neymar looked to have kept Brazil’s hopes of a sixth World Cup title alive by starting and finishing a brilliant move in extra time to equal Pele’s international scoring record of 77 goals for the country.
But Croatia dragged themselves back into the game as Bruno Petkovic popped up to make it 1-1.
Neymar’s flash of brilliance had lit up a tense game that finished with a flourish, Croatia’s man-of-the-match goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic pulling off a series of great saves to keep the Brazilians at bay.
But as extra time ticked down at the Education City Stadium, Petkovic connected with a cross and his deflected shot found its way past Brazil goalkeeper Alisson.
The game ended in a one all draw and this meant that the match would be decided on penalties.
Croatia were flawless in the shootout, while Livakovic their goalkeeper saved Rodrygo’s spot-kick and Marquinhos hit the post.
It was an incredible comeback by Croatia, who are now one step away from reaching their second straight final with their golden generation.
They advance to the semi-finals, while Brazil will have to wait at least another four years before they compete and make strides to win their sixth title.
Neymar was left in tears after Brazil was knocked out of the World Cup and was consoled by veteran teammate Dani Alves.
