Benzema says he was inspired by Ronaldo and Zidane when growing up and winning this accolade has reminded him when he was growing up dreaming of winning it.
Other than just his stand out performances, the other contributing factors in his triumph is winning the UEFA Champions League when they defeated Liverpool lasts season.
Benzema collected the award from his former coach Zidane and in reaction to winning he said, “It makes me proud to have this trophy in front of me,” as quoted by Real Madrid website.

“I remember when I was younger and all the hard work and training sessions. It was a dream I had as a child and I always had this award in my mind. I was motivated to win it because of two of my idols: Zidane and Ronaldo.
“It’s an award that every footballer has in mind. It’s very tough to win it, but not impossible. I don’t only think about scoring goals, but about having fun out on the pitch and helping my teammates.”
The Frenchman also recalled difficult times he has endured while he also said the award is for all not only himself.

“It’s an individual award, but it’s also a team one and, for me, this is a Ballon d’Or for the people, for everyone and all the fans,” he added.
“There’s a lot of work that goes into this and you’ve got to keep following the dream because there have been some really tough times.
“You’ve sometimes got to think about the tough times, like when I wasn’t part of the national team, but never once did I stop working.”
Benzema went on to give thanks to his family, Real Madrid, teammates and coaches (club and national team).

“I’m really proud of my career. Those were tough times for my family and I had to be mentally strong. I’m really satisfied with my work.
“I want to thank my Real Madrid and national-team teammates. Thanks to my coach and my great president, who’s like a member of my family because he came to my house to sign me and he showed what kind of person he is.
“He’s got all my respect. I also want to thank Lyon and their president, because without them, I wouldn’t have made it to Real Madrid. Thanks also to my family. My parents are here tonight,” he concluded.
