On Thursday, Matt Hutchins appeared on the “Today” show and spoke out publically for the first time since the tragic death of his wife, Halyna. In October 2021, Halyna, a cinematographer, was killed by actor Alec Baldwin when he accidentally fired a prop gun.
Hutchins sat down with Hoda Kotb and discussed how he took the news and how difficult it was to break the tragic news to their 9-year-old son. Hutchins also revealed how upset he was when he saw Baldwin do an interview last year talking about the incident.
And in February, Hutchins also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and the producers of Rust.
Alec Baldwin says he isn’t to blame for the shooting
When talking about his reaction towards Baldwin’s interview with ABC, Hutchins remembers how “angry” he was at how open Baldwin was speaking about his wife’s death.
“Watching him I just felt so angry,” Hutchins said. “I was just so angry to see him talk about her death so publicly in such a detailed way and then to not accept any responsibility after having just described killing her.”
During the ABC interview, Baldwin clearly stated that he felt like he wasn’t the one to be held responsible.
“Someone is responsible for what happened, and I can’t say who that is, but I know it’s not me,” Baldwin said.
“Honest to God, if I felt that I was responsible, I might have killed myself if I thought I was responsible,” Baldwin said. “I don’t say that lightly.”

And in response to the ABC interview, Hutchins said that Baldwin’s way of reasoning made no sense to him.
“The idea that the person holding the gun causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me.”
“[It] almost sounds like he was the victim,” he continued. “And hearing him blame Halyna in the interview and shift responsibility to others and seeing him cry about it, I just feel — are we really supposed to feel bad about you, Mr Baldwin?”
Investigations for Halyna Hutchins’ death are still ongoing
The investigations into Halyna’s death are still ongoing and no one has yet officially been charged in connection with the incident.
And according to Baldwin, he never even pulled the trigger. In the interview last year, Baldwin described having only pulled back the hammer of the gun. And when he let go of the hammer, the gun went off.
