Jacob Zuma’s trial to be postponed again?
According to the Jacob Zuma Foundation, further delaying the decade-long corruption trial of the former president remains a “definite option“.
The trial is scheduled to start on 11 April 2022, however, the foundation may even apply for another postponement on day one of the trials.
And although Zuma has publicly said that he wants his “day in court” to prove his innocence, he has also been repeatedly involved in multiple cases to keep himself out of court.
Eskom’s tariff hike for municipalities may be less than expected
After Eskom’s tariff hikes kicked in on the 1st of April for everyday customers, municipalities have been waiting for their tariff hikes to be released that will kick in from July.
And recently, energy regulator Nersa has proposed an average increase of 7.47% for municipalities. However, the regulator is currently faining two legal cases regarding its system of tariff setting – which it opposes.
And according to Nersa, it will need data from municipalities in order to create a “fully-fledged methodology” that should be ready by the end of April for public comment.
SARS on the tax hunt
According to Commissioner Edward Kieswetter, SARS will not hesitate to go after any person or entity if they do not comply with tax returns. And thus far, SARS has collected more than R1.5 trillion in revenue.
With this, questions regarding the ANC’s overdue tax bill came into play, to which the commissioner responded that he has given the political party a request to pay its R100 million overdue bill.
