What is ‘Koringslaai’ aka Wheat Salad?

‘Koringslaai’ is a Cape Malay salad from South Africa, made up of wheat, peppers, peaches, sultanas or raisins, a delectable sauce, and traditional earthy flavors of curry spice, turmeric and chutney. The sauce is made from olive oil, turmeric powder, curry powder, Mrs. Balls Chutney, sugar, vinegar, and condensed milk. This recipe will leave you with a sweet and spicy wheat salad that will be the perfect side for curries and meat dishes (or you can just enjoy a full plate of it on its own!).

A Cape Malay Meal

‘Koringslaai’ is made with traditional spices and comes from the Cape Malay cuisine – a cooking style from the Dutch settlers (also known as the Cape Malays) who settled into the Malay district of Cape Town, South Africa, otherwise known as the Bo Kaap. These Dutch settlers brought a specific cooking style with them, that has since been embraced by South African food lovers. Cape Malay style foods boast a beautiful mix of sweet and spicy flavors, with spices such as curry powder, turmeric, and cumin, as well as chutney, fresh fruit, and dried fruits.

Enjoy this traditional South African wheat salad with those festive dishes in the summer holidays when friends and family come to visit- it is truly a showstopper of a dish!
