Hangry is a colloquial term frequently used in conversations with people but where did it start and when did people start using the term?

The full meaning behind being Hangry

As early as 1992, the word Hangry was first used in The London Magazine. However, it was first coined in 1918. In the text, the person describes someone being hungry and angry at the same time.

It reads, “Listen,” she says, “is hangry” (and this word of hers I remembered because hunger and anger I learned are sometimes one and the same).

So, in the piece shared above, being Hangry is notably a state of being angry and hungry at the same time. This only occurs for one obvious reason, being hungry.

While the word Hangry has remained a largely colloquial term, the word has become increasingly relevant in today’s day and age. In the fast-paced world, we live in today, it’s very easy to reach this state of emotion.

Research suggests that being Hangry occurs when there is a low level of sugar in the body. As a result, being hungry triggers a stress emotion which then leads to feelings of frustration or anger.

How to control it

There is, of course, one remedy to fix this state of emotion and that is food. Simply eating when you need to and eating right, will allow you to avoid feeling Hangry. In that way, your glucose levels and the ability to control your emotions will simultaneously be controlled. Evidently, both go hand in hand.

To date, studies also suggest that a spouse is more likely to argue with their partner if their glucose sugar levels are low. In order to deal with this emotion, it is helpful to differentiate between being Hangry and actually feeling angry.

Ask yourself, have I eaten today? Is a useful way to start handling your emotions. If you have, it is likely that your eating habits are a bit different from everyone else’s. While some people find it filling to simply have their three-course meal a day, others may still be hungry after completing these meals.

In this case, dieticians suggest healthy snacking to starve the feeling of hanger. So, if you’ve ever wondered if being Hangry was a real thing, it does exist, and it’s actually a medical phenomenon.
