Curated Cape Town unwind: galleries, cocktails, sparkling wine, and a SAMA-winning voice.

The sun slides behind Table Mountain as street murals glow, a chilled cocktail hits your lips, and South Africa’s finest bubbles dance on your tongue. This is J.C. Fridays—the monthly ritual that turns the last Friday into pure creative escape.

On 31 October 2025, J.C. Fridays at House of J.C. Le Roux in Stellenbosch opens from 1 pm to 8 pm. Pair the day with a morning art walk in Woodstock and pre-event cocktails for the ultimate stress-melting itinerary.

Why the Last Friday Feels Like Freedom

Five days of emails, deadlines, and traffic have stacked up like unopened bottles. Then the calendar flips to the final Friday, and Cape Town exhales. J.C. Le Roux invented this exhale in 2018, turning the House cellar into a monthly pop-up of music, food, and—most importantly—sparkle. No stuffy tasting notes here; just friends, laughter, and the pop of a cork that says the weekend has officially landed.

Picture rolling hills of vineyards framed by the Hottentots-Holland mountains. The air carries grape must and jasmine. Inside the tasting room, fairy lights twinkle above long wooden tables where strangers become instant companions over shared plates. This is the backdrop for every J.C. Fridays, and on 31 October it gets an extra layer of soul courtesy of Rowlene.

The J.C. Fridays Experience

South Africa’s original sparkling wine house hosts this sensory celebration 45 minutes from the city centre, amid Devon Valley vineyards and mountain vistas. The gates open at 1 pm; the last cork pops at 8 pm. In those seven hours you’ll taste, toast, and probably dance barefoot on the lawn.

  • Complimentary welcome flute – choose classic Méthode Cap Classique or the non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice.
  • Guided seated pairings – four courses, four bubblies. Think salmon-trout blini with Le Domaine brut; avocado flatbread kissed by Sauvignon Blanc bubbles; Turkish delight melting into the sweet Nectar demi-sec.
  • Live music stage – local DJs warm the crowd, then Rowlene steps up at golden hour.
  • Spot prizes – R5,000 in hampers, vouchers, and magnums up for grabs.
  • Picnic lawns & photo booths – perfect for sunset selfies with Table Mountain in the distance.

Tickets are R350 (strictly 18+), available exclusively on Howler. Book early—October’s edition sold out in nine days last year.

Rowlene: Cape Town’s Voice of Now

Rowlene Nicole Bosman was singing before she could spell her surname. Raised in Elsies River, she harmonised in school choirs while the Cape Flats hummed with hardship and hope outside the gates. A viral cover at 16 caught the ear of Tall Racks Records; by 19 she was opening for Nasty C. In 2020 her single “Creeping” with Blxckie went platinum, and the South African Music Awards crowned her Best Female Artist.

Her sound? Velvet R&B layered over trap beats, lyrics that read like diary pages left open on the dashboard. On the J.C. stage she’ll weave new tracks from her upcoming album with crowd favourites “Imposter” and “Dance With You.” Expect goosebumps when the chorus of “Sunday Morning” floats across the vineyards just as the sky turns peach.

Morning Fuel: Woodstock Art & Coffee

Start your Friday at 10 am in Woodstock—Cape Town’s beating creative heart. Albert Road is a living canvas: murals by Faith47 wrap around corners, while a giant portrait of Nelson Mandela peers from a three-storey wall. Fuel up at Superette with a flat white and avo on sourdough, then dive into the galleries.

Stevenson (stevenson.info) showcases heavyweights like Zanele Muholi—book a free slot online to avoid queues. Across the street, Southern Guild (southernguild.co.za) displays sculptural furniture that blurs art and design; their bronze-and-marble pieces have graced Beyoncé’s home. Emerging voices hide at Art It Is (artitis.co.za)—snap up an affordable print before the artist blows up.

Pro tip: download the Woodstock Street Art map for a self-guided mural hunt. The route takes 90 minutes and ends at The Old Biscuit Mill, perfect timing for noon cocktails.

Noon: Craft Cocktails in the Hood

Slide into The House of Machines for a fynbos gin spritz—rooibos, honeybush, and buchu dance with local gin. Or try Burrata Bar’s sparkling Negroni flight if you want to ease into the bubbles theme. Both spots are a five-minute Uber from the art strip and a 40-minute cruise to Stellenbosch.

Afternoon: Bubbles, Bites & Sunset Beats

  1. 1 pm – Arrival & Welcome Toast
Hand over your Howler ticket, grab a flute, find your table.
  2. 1:30 pm – Pairing Session 1
Brut meets salmon blini; the sommelier explains why acidity cuts through cream.
  3. 3 pm – Lawn Time
Picnic blankets, photo booths, DJ spinning amapiano remixes.
  4. 5 pm – Rowlene Live
Golden hour set; phones up for Instagram stories.
  5. 6:30 pm – Final Pairing & Prizes
Sweet Nectar with dessert; someone screams as they win a jeroboam.
  6. 8 pm – Sunset Farewell
Last glass on the terrace, mountains silhouetted in pink.

Getting There & Staying Safe

Drive-share with friends or book an Uber Black—45 minutes from Woodstock. Designated drivers receive free non-alcoholic bubblies all day. The venue offers secure parking and shuttle drop-offs at Stellenbosch hotels if you’re staying over. For city return, pre-book a 9 pm ride; the N1 is quiet post-sunset.

Dress code: smart-casual with comfortable shoes—lawns get dewy. Bring a light jacket; October evenings cool fast once the sun dips.

Extend the Magic

Turn Friday into a weekend. Saturday markets in Stellenbosch offer farm-fresh breakfast, while Sunday wine tram tours let you taste neighbouring estates without moving your car. Locals swear by the Franschhoek Wine Tram hop-on-hop-off route—pair it with a picnic from Boschendal.

Art, flavour, music, mountains—one Friday, endless memories. Mark 31 October in your calendar, rally your crew, and let the bubbles carry the week away.
