Picasso’s long-lost 1943 portrait Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat has shattered expectations at a Paris auction, selling for €32 million after being hidden for more than 80 years. Painted during World War II and inspired by his muse Dora Maar, the rediscovered work reveals both artistic brilliance and emotional depth. “Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat” resurfaces after more than 80 years and breaks auction records in Paris.

In a dramatic moment at the Paris auction house Drouot on 24 October 2025, Pablo Picasso’s long-lost 1943 portrait of his muse Dora Maar — titled Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat — sold for €32 million (≈US $37 million). AP News reported that this vibrant oil on canvas had not been publicly seen for over eight decades, making it the highest-priced artwork sold in France this year.

The Rediscovery: From Private Collection to Auction Spotlight

Painted on 11 July 1943 during the Nazi occupation of France, the work was acquired in 1944 by a private French family and then remained hidden from view for more than 80 years. Only a grainy black-and-white photograph previously attested its existence. Reuters noted its remarkable state of preservation when rediscovered.

When the heirs of the collector family sought to divide the estate, they turned to auction. Art expert Agnès Sevestre-Barbé described the canvas as “exactly as when it left the studio… all its raw material, all of it.”

Bidding escalated from an estimated €15–20 million to a hammer price of €27 million; with fees the final total reached €32 million. The auctioneer, Christophe Lucien, called it “an enormous success” and “a little piece of the story of love” between the artist and his muse.

Picasso & Dora Maar: Muse, Artist, and Legacy

Picasso met Dora Maar in 1936; she was a renowned photographer and painter. Their partnership lasted about seven years, during which she posed for iconic works such as Guernica. Their artistic collaboration was as intense as their romance.

By 1943 the relationship was unraveling: Picasso had begun a liaison with another artist, and this portrait is believed to have been painted just months before their final separation. Lucien remarked, “You see that she was containing tears because she understood that Picasso was leaving her.”

Today, Dora Maar’s own work and influence are being re-evaluated. Once viewed mainly as Picasso’s muse, she is increasingly recognized as a key surrealist photographer and artist in her own right.

Decoding the Canvas: Style & Significance

Measuring approximately 65 × 54 cm, the work belongs to Picasso’s “Women in a Hat” series from the early 1940s. The subject, Maar, is depicted wearing a flamboyant floral hat rendered in vivid crimsons, electric blues, and sunny yellows—a striking contrast to her somber expression.

Art historians situate this piece in Picasso’s wartime output: though rooted in cubism, it emphasizes emotional intensity, gestural brushwork, and bold, unblended strokes. The raw, unvarnished surface amplifies the impact of its luminous palette, heightening the sense of immediacy and vulnerability.

The Auction Event: A Global Spectacle

The sale at Drouot was more than a transaction—it became a cultural moment. Pre-auction displays in major cities sparked international interest, and bidders from several continents competed for the painting. The winning buyer, present in the room, outbid phone participants from major art-market hubs.

While €32 million falls short of Picasso’s global record—the 2015 sale of Les Femmes d’Alger fetched $179 million—it reaffirms his enduring dominance in the art market, particularly for rediscovered works with impeccable provenance.

Impact & After-Effects in the Art World

The discovery and sale signal robust health in the market for high-end modern art. Market analysts note that Picasso’s overall auction value has risen roughly 15 % in 2025. For scholars and curators, this painting offers new material for study and may feature in future exhibitions and retrospectives.

Hidden for decades and born from a turbulent romance, Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat reminds us that even in the digital age, art history can still unveil remarkable surprises—proof that passion and genius never truly fade.
