Today, October 30, 2025, South African grocery leaders Pick n Pay and Checkers launch the country’s first major “Quiet Hour” pilots. Select stores in Johannesburg and Cape Town open early with dimmed lights, no music, muted announcements, and trained staff—creating calm spaces for shoppers sensitive to sensory overload.

In a nation where 1 in 54 children is autistic, per Autism South Africa, routine errands often trigger distress. Johannesburg parent Sarah Mthembu says, “Shopping used to mean meltdowns. Now we leave smiling.”

What Happens During Quiet Hour?

Stores reduce lighting glare, silence PA systems and background tunes, lower scanner beeps, and limit crowds. Staff trained in neurodiversity offer discreet help—noise-canceling headphones, priority quiet checkouts, or simple patience.

For families managing autism, ADHD, PTSD, or sensory challenges, these adjustments restore independence and ease daily stress in busy retail hubs.

Where and When It Starts

Every Wednesday, 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM:

  • Pick n Pay: Sandton City and Fourways (Johannesburg)
  • Checkers: Sea Point and Canal Walk (Cape Town)

Look for entrance signs and greeters. Success here could expand nationwide—share feedback through store apps.

Real Impact on Families

Global trials show 80% fewer meltdowns. Cape Town father Lwazi Nkosi tested a preview: “My son chose his own cereal—first time ever.” Mental health experts call it “inclusive retail done right.”

BRICS partner innovations include autism job programs paired with calm zones. South Africa now joins this inclusive wave.

Local Pioneer: Woolworths

Woolworths already runs Quiet Hours in select outlets, earning social media praise. Pick n Pay and Checkers, holding 60% market share, scale the model with advocacy from Autism South Africa.

Tips for Your Visit

  1. Arrive at opening—spaces fill quickly.
  2. Ask for sensory kits (earplugs, fidgets).
  3. Opt for self-checkout if available.
  4. Thank staff for their support.

A Calmer Retail Future

Inclusive design drives loyalty—accommodated households spend 20% more. Today’s pilot could spark longer hours and nationwide rollout, turning supermarkets into spaces that truly welcome everyone.

Watch for expansion updates and family stories.
