Public Wages dispute far from over
According to South Africa’s public service unions, their dispute with the government regarding public sector wages is “far from over” – and strike action has also not been ruled out.
The unions have recently expressed disappointment with the Constitutional Court ruling since their application was dismissed. The application was to force the government to pay the third year of a negotiated wage agreement. However, the court found the agreement “unlawful” and “invalid”. And so, authority was given to the government to renege on the multi-billion rand deal.
According to unions, the ruling makes negotiating with the government over wages that much more difficult after the breakdown of trust.
Red Notice for Atul and Rajesh Gupta
Red notices have been issued for Atul and Rajesh Gupta by the international criminal police organisation Interpol after months of legal proceedings. The notices are related to the fraud and money laundering allegations the Guptas are facing.
The charges are centred around the Free State Department of Agriculture and the payment of R24.9 million to Gupta-linked entities.
A red notice is a “formal request to members of Interpol to apprehend and hold a suspect pending an extradition process”. And according to the National Prosecuting Authority, this will assist the state in getting the Gupta brothers to face trial in South Africa.
Ukraine and Russian negotiators met on Monday for the first time
The meeting was set to take place on the border of Ukraine’s neighbouring country, Belarus. And it was said that negotiators from Ukraine will be calling for an “immediate ceasefire”.
“The key issue of the talks is an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, is sceptical about the possibility of his delegation team having a breakthrough.
