On Sunday night, Orlando Pirates player, Nkanyiso Zungu, was arrested for allegedly assaulting his partner. And as a result, the soccer club decided to suspend the midfielder.
Police confirms the arrest
The soccer player was arrested in Johannesburg by Moffatview police and provincial police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo, confirmed the arrest.
“A 26-year-old professional soccer player was arrested by the police in Johannesburg on Sunday 13 March 2020 for the alleged assault of his partner,” he said.
Furthermore, Zungu is expected to appear in the Booysens magistrate’s court today where he faces a charge of common assault under domestic violence.
The arrest happened after the club came out victorious and won 3-0 against Royal Leopards in the CAF Confederation Cup in Soweto. The team went out to celebrate their victory when Zungu’s night ended in handcuffs.
Orlando Pirates suspends Zungu post-arrest
Orlando Pirates also confirmed Zungu’s arrest and released a statement, announcing that the club is suspending the player.
“The Club suspends Mr Zungu pending an investigation. As this matter is currently in the hands of the authorities, the Club is unable to make further comments until this process is complete.”
This arrest marks the sixth arrest in six years among the Buccaneers.
